File Listings

I’m using my Mac Mini full time now and found something that kind of bothers me. When I open up a folder that contains files as well as other folders, it lists them all alphabetically. Is there a way to get them to list the folders first and then the files, like it does in Windows?

You can have them sorted by ‘kind’. If Kind isn’t listed, goto the View menu and select "Show View Options" and check the box for Kind.

Is there a way to make that the default for the computer or will I have to do it for each folder I open?

it’s supposed to be that way for all of Finder.

Mine sort by name.

My response didn’t come through as intended…my bad.

What I meant to say was it reflects that way throughout finder. The only time i’ve found it to be different for one folder than another is if you link to that folder directly and have it viewed differently than the rest.

Not sure how anyone does that…I have to have all of mine display the same way.

Yeah, I’m the same way. List view and folders on top. Unless its pictures, then I like to see thumbnails. I just don’t need to see a thumbnail of a pdf or something like that.

I guess you can sort by kind, but I just left finder the way it is by default (for the most part). If I want folders up top, I just name then "!Pictures" or something with the ! in the front and it forces it up top.

Thumbnails are unnecessary…you need to learn quick view.

With a Finder window open hit CMD-J and choose to display the listings by "Kind". That should make the setting system wide.

My solution to this ended up being an app called TotalFinder. It has an option for putting all the folders on top, regardless of how you sort it. It does a number of other things, including tabbed Finder windows. It supposedly costs $15, but i’ve installed the trial and never found any limitation (it just sticks a bar in the top right saying ‘unregistered’).
