Connecting to Lion share from Windows 7.

Trying to have one of my Windows 7 machines mount an shared folder from my iMac. It always refuses the password though. The only way I can seem to get it to work is if I setup a guest account and use that, however then it has no password, which I don’t want.

Anyone successfully able to access an OSX share from Windows w/o using a guest account?

I do all the time. I connect as computernameusername with my mac password. So, if your mac’s computer name is imac and your mac’s account is Brendon then your ID would be imacBrendon not ServerBrendon.

How can I make a Boot CD or Flash Drive that will get me to the command prompt?

Trying to install WinXP on an old ass laptop. Seems like the CD drive is fucked. I can do a fresh XP install from boot, but it gets corrupted (can’t run any programs, most components missing). I’ve tried multiple versions of XP with multiple CDs, HD is fine, RAM is fine, so I’m thinking the problem is the CD drive itself.

I was able to copy over the XP CD install files onto my HD and wanted to install straight from there, but of course since this XP install is corrupted, I can’t run any .exes. So I was thinking if I could just get to the command prompt, I can run setup and get Windows to install. Either that or boot from the flash drive (I’d have to pick up a 1GB+ flash drive which I currently don’t have and would buy as a last resort).

picasa? I was wondering the same thing myself. I never used MobileMe’s galleries, since I have most of my shit on Facebook but in the event I say fuck you to FB and delete my account, it’d be nice to have another place to share my pics on.

What do you guys think about this deal?

Mac Pro 2.8Ghz 8-Core Desktop computer
(RAM: 2GB (default), Disk Size: 320GB (default), Enclosure Condition: A-Grade (add $50))

Grand Total: $1,800.00 USD

So that’s 2 quad core Harpertown processors

Nothin’?

This would be to replace a quite unexpectedly blowed up Mac1,1 dual two core 2.66ghz.

Upgrade the ram and it should be a pretty alright machine. What version of OS X is it running on? 10.6.8? If you don’t need the 8 cores though, I would just buy a new 27 inch iMac with the i5(or an i7 if you think you need it) quad core. It’s going to have better graphical performance (radeon HD6970M), more ram(4GB, upgradable to 16GB), one of the best displays, Lion, 1TB of HD space(Upgradable, too), and a warranty. Apple website lists it at 1,999 USD. Therefore, yes, the mac pro is an alright deal. If I were going to drop 2k on an Apple again though, I would get the iMac. It’s the better deal. I’m running a late 2009 27 inch, and it can easily handle photoshop, final cut pro, and the pretty graphically heavy games that I throw at it. The new would be more than adequate for my industrial use, so it would handle the same work load or less(depending on what you need it for). Your choice though.

Looking for an external CD/DVD drive

I just got a MacBook Air and I need an external CD/DVD burner that actually works. I’ve read a lot of reviews saying that certain drives need to use TWO USB ports just to receive power while burning.

Does anyone with a MBA have a success story with a decently priced drive that they’d like to share?

Thanks!

get the superdrive made for the MBA for 79.99, i have it and have never had a problem

perl/python/etc script to wrap up multiple text files

how would you guys handle this? i need a repeatable script to do this multiple times a day. i haven’t dicked with unix scripts in ages and this crap didn’t come back to me like i hoped it would.

problem…
The input is multiple plain-text log files, some of which may be very large (say, 500MB), whose lines are of the form:

YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS LEVEL <arbitrary text>

Where LEVEL is one of ERROR WARN INFO.

I want to do the OptiBay SSD swap on my MBP…

I’ll be doing this on my early 2009 15" MBP. Is there a better guide than the above? Are there better parts than that?

The main question is, what’s the best SSD for this? I’ve been reading guides and reviews and my brain feels like mush. Not sure what brands/models are fast andreliable for a decent price. And what will work flawlessly with the MBP.

Thanks for any tips!

iFixit.com has tear down on all models with pics so that should help.

Public network Wifi help

I have had this problem with Windows 7, & setting up network for basic internet access. the thing is I set up VMWare on my PC. I was testing different Distros. of linux. Well one night I started having trouble getting online. turned out that in my Windows 7 network and sharing center, you know where is says "View your basic network information and set up connections. below where it usually has the little house and says Home Network.

Somehow by magic it only saw Public network and stopped working. No matter WTF I did I couldn’t get rid of that. and to fix the problem I turned off completely the firewall and all the Windows 7 security. it was the only way to get it back online. & this is all hardwired in to my desktop (NOT WIRELESS). so this was a while back and I have since replaced my HDD..
